Susumu “Sus” Nakagawa, 98, of Hilo died Sept. 22 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was an entomologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and former owner of the Seaside Restaurant and Aquafarm, member of the 442nd Veterans Club and Hilo Meishoin Buddhist Temple, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and served in the U.S. Army’s 100th Infantry Battalion of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Service at later date. Survived by daughters, Cheryl (Wilbert Low) Nakagawa of Hilo and Linda (Mark) Laughlin of Portland, Ore.; sons, Colin (Sharon Beauchan) Nakagawa of Hilo and Kris (Janna) Nakagawa of Honolulu; sisters-in-law, Harumi Nakagawa of Hilo and Ella Fujie of Wailuku; nieces, nephews and cousins. Conrad Roland, 86, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 25 at home.
